Keep your muscle while the weight comes off
Up to 40% of the weight lost on a GLP-1 can be muscle, not fat. Four nutrients, one scoop a day, about 35 calories.

Where the 40% comes from
In the largest semaglutide study — the drug behind Wegovy and Ozempic — people lost about 15% of their body weight over more than a year, and almost 10% of their lean mass went with it. That's more than one pound in three coming from muscle rather than fat.¹
In the largest tirzepatide study — Mounjaro and Zepbound — muscle came to about a quarter of the total. Because the total was larger, the actual pounds lost could match or beat the semaglutide numbers.²
A 2024 review found the number can run higher without a plan: up to 40% of the weight lost coming from muscle, when nothing is done to protect it.³
Why your muscle matters more than the scale
Your medication is working on the weight. This is about keeping your muscle.
Four nutrients, four different jobs
Research on preserving muscle during weight loss keeps pointing to the same four.
Creatine Monohydrate
Dose: 5 g
One of the most-researched supplements in nutrition science, at the dose used across that research.⁷
- Powers harder training and better results from every workout
- Helps your body hold onto muscle when you’re eating less
- The most-researched ingredient in muscle nutrition
THE ENGINE
Essential Amino Acids
Dose: 5 g, with a 2 g leucine pulse
The specific molecules your muscles listen for, delivered with almost no calories — which is exactly what matters when appetite is low.⁶
- The signal that tells your body to build and keep muscle
- Works on almost no calories — so it does its job even when appetite is low
- Leucine-enriched, the form your muscles respond to
THE SPARK
Calcium HMB
Dose: 2 g
A leucine metabolite that signals the body to slow muscle breakdown. Research has used daily doses in the 2 to 3 gram range.⁸
- Helps slow the breakdown of muscle
- Matters most when you’re eating less or moving less than usual
- The muscle-sparing piece most formulas skip
THE SHIELD
Vitamin D3
Dose: 15 mcg
Paired with leucine-rich amino acids, it supported strength and physical function more than amino acids alone.⁹ An ingredient most muscle formulas leave out entirely.
- Supports the normal muscle function behind everyday strength
- Helps your other muscle nutrients do their job
- The ingredient most muscle formulas leave out
THE CONDUCTOR

We couldn’t buy it, so we built it
Balaena Muscle Essentials is built for keeping muscle — all four of these nutrients in one place, chosen to work on one problem from four directions. We went looking for something like it back in 2023, couldn't find one, and made it ourselves. Everything on the shelf meant four separate products to buy, store and remember, on the days you may not feel like doing any of it.
Most products aimed at this moment are general wellness formulas with a couple of muscle ingredients added on top. This one is only about muscle.
— Cheryl and Dave, Co-Founders

Easy to take, every day
Most muscle products are built for people eating more. This one is built for people eating less.
- One small scoop, not a handful of pills
- Mixes clean in 8 ounces of cold water — low fluid volume, no chalk
- Naturally sweetened mixed berry, no artificial sweeteners
- Not a protein powder — it won't compete with your appetite or replace a meal
- No loading phase, no timing rules — one scoop whenever it fits your day

Balaena Muscle Essentials
Four nutrients your muscles need, in one daily scoop — essential amino acids with a 2g leucine pulse, creatine, calcium HMB, and vitamin D3. Mixed berry, about 35 calories, mixes clean in cold water. Built to work alongside the protein you already eat, not instead of it.
What to look for in any GLP-1 muscle supplement
- Creatine monohydrate at 5 g. Most blends carry a fraction of that.
- HMB at 2 g or more. Many formulas include a token amount, or skip it entirely.
- Free-form essential amino acids at 5 g, with at least 2 g of leucine. A few grams of plant protein blended into a greens mix is not the same thing.
- Vitamin D3 in the formula. Most muscle formulas contain none.
The Balaena standard: Quality without compromise
Questions we hear from GLP-1 users
Why should I be concerned about losing muscle while I'm losing weight?
Three reasons, and they stack. Muscle is where your strength comes from, and losing it while you lose weight means ending up smaller but not stronger. Pound for pound it also burns about three times the calories fat does, even at rest, and that number doesn't come back on its own when the weight does.⁴ And keeping muscle is far easier than rebuilding it.
Can I take this with my GLP-1 medication?
Yes. It's a dietary supplement, not a second medication. Balaena Muscle Essentials is four ingredients — essential amino acids, creatine, HMB, and vitamin D3 — studied for decades. It isn't designed to interact with a medication or to change your appetite. One daily scoop is about 35 calories. Still, if you take a prescription, talk with your prescriber before adding any supplement.
Is this a protein powder?
No. Protein powders give you building material in bulk — usually 20 to 30 grams with the calories to match. Balaena delivers the signals your body uses to hold onto muscle in about 35 calories. It works alongside the protein you already eat, not instead of it.
When will I notice a difference?
Consistency matters more than timing. In the research on these four nutrients, changes in strength and body composition typically show up over 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Everyone responds differently.
What happens when I stop the medication?
Research shows most people who stop a GLP-1 regain about two-thirds of the weight within a year, and it tends to return as fat faster than as muscle.⁵ Muscle you hold onto during the weight-loss phase is part of what gives you a stronger starting point if or when you come off.
